Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture is not a single city but a constellation of mountain towns and villages in southeastern Guizhou, treated here as one story region. Its steep valleys hold timber houses, covered wind-and-rain bridges, drum towers, rice terraces, and markets where indigo cloth and elaborate silver ornaments remain part of living culture. Miao and Dong communities give the prefecture its most recognizable traditions, from antiphonal singing and lusheng festivals to the polyphonic Dong Grand Song. Yet Qiandongnan is more than a collection of festival images. It is a place shaped by migration, farming, craftsmanship, language, kinship, and the difficult balance between tourism and village life.
