ChongqingThe 8D Mountain City of Fog & Fire

The 8D city where your GPS gives up.

City portrait

There are cities that spread across a map, and then there is Chongqing: a metropolis that appears to have folded the map into a paper sculpture. Elevators double as public streets. A train disappears into a residential tower. Bridges land halfway up hillsides and a plaza that seems to be at ground level reveals itself to be twenty-two floors above another road. At night, the Yangtze and Jialing rivers gather the city lights into long ribbons of gold. Chongqing rewards the visitor who stops asking which floor they are on. Its stories are similarly layered: wartime tunnels beneath shopping streets, old teahouses clinging to the riverbanks, and cauldrons of red broth whose origins are still debated over late-night tables.
